MISSION STATEMENT

Many mature democracies now embrace citizen participation in making decisions about crime control and operating programs to enhance public safety. Such activities aim not only to reduce crime and conflict but also to enrich the experience of active democratic citizenship. Can participatory justice support democracy in transitional states, too? And can democratization in political systems support citizen participation in justice?

This website presents information on justice projects that include citizen involvement in democratizing countries. It provides a space where people involved in community-based conflict resolution, community policing and crime prevention in countries in transition can learn about each others’ work, share their experiences, and discover scholarly work on this topic from around the world. We hope the database will grow as users of the website send us information on projects we haven’t discovered.
